about

The third part of the Clavier Übung is surely the answer to an old question. Did Bach write large quantities of church music out of profound religious conviction, or simply because he happened to spend most of his life employed as a professional church musician, organist and cantor? There was no pressing external reason for him to compose Clavier Übung III; it was not required by his employment and nobody commissioned it. Its only dedication is to ‘music-lovers, and in par- ticular to those experienced in this sort of work’.Yet it is a series of profound meditations on the central doctrines of Lutheran faith, written with all the traditional expressive and communicative musical means of which Bach was the greatest master. It is the summit of his achievement as an improviser and composer of chorale-based organ works, and as such has never been equalled, let alone surpassed.
